Although Japan’s applied research programs flourish with economic benefits and increased global prestige, its governmental funding for basic scientific research continues to diminish. The article charts the progression of governmental focus on industrial research and Japan’s increasingly negligent attitude towards university research. An increased focus on basic scientific research and, in particular, more funding for university research, could provide a more stable path to success and diversify Japan’s industry.
